Spanish students are among the most optimistic in the world when it comes to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their academic and professional futures. According to a global study conducted by Yugo, the leading international student housing operator, a significant portion of Spain’s student population is already integrating AI tools into their daily routines. However, this enthusiasm is tempered by notable concerns about the impact of AI on jobs and human relationships.
How Spanish Students Are Using AI
The study, which surveyed over 7,000 students across nine countries—91% of whom belong to Generation Z—revealed that nearly half (45%) of Spanish students use AI to review their academic work, while 41% rely on it to simplify complex information. Other popular uses include translation (27%), essay structuring (18%), and receiving suggestions to improve their writing (17%).
When it comes to career preparation, the adoption of AI continues. About 12% of Spanish students use AI tools to write their resumes, and 8% turn to it for drafting cover letters. These figures underscore the rising role of AI not just in academic life but also in the job-hunting process.
AI’s Perceived Benefits: Productivity, Research, and Work-Life Balance
Despite underlying worries, Spanish students recognize multiple advantages of AI. One of the most widely acknowledged benefits is increased productivity—65% believe AI will help them work more efficiently, freeing up time for personal interests and activities.
Beyond productivity, students also see AI as a tool for societal advancement. Another 65% cite its potential for driving breakthroughs in medical and technological research. Additionally, 46% believe AI can improve access to education, particularly for underserved communities.
Interestingly, nearly half of the students (48%) think AI will positively impact their work-life balance, allowing better time management and more space for hobbies. Furthermore, 26% of respondents believe AI could democratize access to mental health services by making them more affordable and widely available. Environmental awareness also plays a role: 18% consider AI a key player in combating climate change.
Rising Concerns: Jobs, Human Intelligence, and Social Interaction
Despite the perceived benefits, fears about AI’s darker implications remain strong. A striking 73% of Spanish students are concerned that AI will lead to job loss, possibly affecting their careers even before they begin. This concern is shared across most of Generation Z globally and suggests the need for proactive educational and policy responses.
Another 59% of students worry that increased reliance on AI may lead to a decline in human intelligence. This belief hints at a broader anxiety over the long-term cognitive impacts of depending too heavily on machines.
In terms of human relationships, the picture is also mixed. Over half of those surveyed (53%) fear that AI could reduce genuine human interaction. One in five (19%) even worry that friendships might be replaced by virtual companions, and 15% believe romantic relationships could suffer similar fates.
Environmental impact is another pressing issue, with 19% of students expressing concern over the high energy consumption of AI systems and their potential contribution to climate change.
Who Will Benefit Most from AI?
While Spanish students are optimistic about the power of AI, only a quarter (25%) believe their own generation—Generation Z—will reap the most benefits from it. A larger majority (65%) think that future generations will be the true beneficiaries of AI’s development, indicating a cautious optimism rather than blind faith.
Mental Wellbeing and AI
When it comes to mental health and wellness, AI currently plays a limited role. Only 4% of Spanish students use wellness apps powered by AI to manage stress or anxiety, and 7% use them to monitor sleep and stress levels. However, there is a stronger presence in daily planning, with 15% of students using AI-powered apps to organize their routines.
A Balanced Outlook
In summary, Spanish students present a nuanced and balanced view of artificial intelligence. They appreciate its benefits in areas like education, productivity, and health, while simultaneously expressing deep concerns about job security, cognitive decline, and reduced social interaction. These findings suggest that while AI offers exciting possibilities, a thoughtful and proactive approach is essential to ensure that its development supports, rather than undermines, the aspirations of young people.
Antonio López Bustos, VP of Operations in Continental Europe at Yugo, highlights the importance of understanding students’ evolving perspectives. “At Yugo, we are committed to understanding the changing mindset and aspirations of the students who live with us. That’s why we explore the issues that matter most to them,” he explains. “This year’s research is groundbreaking not only because of its scale but also its international reach. It provides a deep and nuanced understanding of students’ views.”
He adds, “While Spanish students recognize the enormous potential of AI, they also express significant concerns about its wider social impact, especially in the labor market. As an integral part of the educational journey, we believe it’s our responsibility to help prepare students for life beyond university. That includes developing the skills and confidence they need to engage with AI in ways that enhance their future careers.”
